Art writer and curator Francis McWhannell looks at the stories behind a photograph of Akaroa township taken by artist Paul Johns. Based on an example produced 101 years earlier to the day by Jessie Lillian Buckland, Johns’ photograph provides remarkable insight into his practice and his career-long exploration of questions of gender. As a queer man with family ties to Akaroa, McWhannell pays homage to Johns, celebrating his early and open investigation of queerness in Aotearoa and the sensitivity with which he approaches his complex subjects.
The event takes place on Tuesday 17 September from 6 to 8pm at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery.
